- Vehicle detailing facilities
A petrol and oil interceptor, sometimes known as a triple interceptor, is designed to contain and slow the flow of contaminated waste water. The petrol and oil interceptor allows suspended grease, oil and traces of fuel and solvents to float to the top while solids settle to the bottom and cleaner water flows out to sewer.
A petrol and oil interceptor must be evacuated and cleaned at regular intervals by an approved trade waste collection contractor. This typically should occur 3-4 times a year depending upon usage.
Used extensively in the automotive industry, petrol and oil interceptors are often installed downstream of a silt pit which contains a straining basket to collect dirt and grit before it enters the interceptor. Above ground petrol and oil interceptors may also require a pump tank to be installed between the silt pit and interceptor. The pump tank is used to pump the trade waste up to the level of the interceptor.
What size interceptor will my business need?
In general, the capacity of a petrol and oil interceptor needs to be sufficient to hold contaminated waste water for at least one hour before being discharged to sewer.
The appropriate size, or capacity, interceptor will be nominated by your local water authority under your trade waste agreement. You will need to contact your local water authority so they can determine the capacity applicable to your application. To find your local water authority, click here.
